What About EVE Online?

Posted by admin on 4th September 2009 in Game Set Up

EVE Online is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMORPG) set in the far flung future. Mankind has advanced and fall and reinvented itself in another galaxy. In this new world/universe you are a pilot of a starship. Your goal: what ever you want it to be.

One of the unique things about EVE is there is no set path for you to follow. You have free will. You decide your own path and what you will do. You do not have to go in any one direction. Other games you have to follow the path laid down by the game designers (and sometimes you need to figure out what they want you to do as well). There are agents along the way if you want to use them for missions, or not. There are other players to work with or even fight against. In fact EVE has on average (from what i have seen) about 40, 000 players on at any one time. There are also over 300,000 players around the world.

EVE online is a social media. This allows you to chat and interact with all these people. You can find old friends or even make new ones. I know some that have connected with old high school friends and some have gone and visited other countries and spent time with their new friends.

There are a few area that you can try and work at, Miner, Mission runner, Player vs Player (PvP), or try your hand at Business, buying and selling on the market. The choice is yours. As you advance you can command bigger and better starships with more power.

Training new skills is also different in EVE. Other games require you to gain experience points by completing missions and doing a certain number of kills. In EVE time and money are all you need. Use the money you make in the game to buy skill books, then train them. Training is done even if you are not online so after awhile you will learn the new skill and be ready for the next level or even a new one.

EVE Online has produced a series of videos through out its run. And the “Butterfly Effect” is i think one of their best at explaining EVE.

EVE Online has also done 10 free updates over the years and is getting ready to do an 11th. EVE is always improving and changing. The add new ships, skills and equipment, they make changes to things as well from requests from players. Soon they will be releasing a version of EVE that will play on game consoles and have also been working on the ability to not only dock at a station but to get out and walk around in it.

This may all sound complicated and confusing but you do not have to learn everything and definitely not everything at once. You set your own pace and your own path. Also there are a ton and a half of people out there to help you along the way, as well as me and these articles. Together we can all achieve the goals we set for ourselves.

So EVE is attempting to, and in many way succeeding, become one of the best games of our times.

Until next time, Fly Safe
